My summer interning at JNA
Overland Park, Kan. – August 10, 2018 – This summer I had the opportunity to intern at JNA Advertising, working closely with the Brand Activation team on their projects. My experience was well-rounded and diverse; I helped out with client research, learned about social media advertising and content creation, and dipped my feet in the public relations and media world.
My first impression of JNA was how nice everyone at the office was from the get-go. The first day gave me a feel for how fun, close-knit, and friendly the environment is at the agency. I’m sure there can be feelings of uncertainty for both the company and the intern when a summer internship first starts – and I was definitely nervous – but despite this, I immediately felt welcome at JNA.
There were some major benefits to interning at JNA, as well. I was able to indulge in the free LaCroix supply, eat Waistline Wednesday breakfasts, enjoy my Summer Fridays, and participate with a talented (and Best Dressed-winning) team in the annual John Nohe Golf Open. Let’s just say my summer as an intern wasn’t all-work, no-play.
Before beginning, I had a limited grasp on advertising work that was dependent on what I’d learned in my previous college courses. During my internship I was able to gain the hands-on experience I desired and learned what day-to-day work life is like in the industry. I now know that agency life is hectic and fast-paced, often requiring multiple tasks performed at once for a client. Client relationships must be nurtured and kept as a top priority. There is always something new coming up, so you must be flexible and ready to adjust your focus. And not to mention the collaborative process that goes into agency work, with multiple departments often working together to achieve a certain goal for a client.
Going forward now as a student, I know that I want my future studies to focus on the same things I worked on at JNA. Interning reinforced my passion for advertising and its many related fields, like marketing and social media. It has also helped me narrow down my interests so I know what I really want to do in my career, something I struggled with prior to interning. I was able to get a feel for the different types of work that various departments do every day, which helped me gain focus and increase my motivation.
I came out of my experience at JNA with nothing but priceless experiences and a lot of gratitude. I’m most grateful for all of the learning opportunities I was given. The second thing I’m most grateful for is the people that work there. The team was always willing to let me jump in on a project, sit in on a meeting or conference call, and was nice enough to show me the ropes of whatever I was working on. And they’re some pretty great, friendly people to talk to – even when it’s not about work. A big thank you is in order to everyone at the agency for making this summer so memorable.
